Percents and fractions. Knowing how to write percents as fractions and vice versa can help you in your everyday life. For example, let's say you earned a grade of 80% on a test. You can convert 80% into a fraction to find out how many of your answers were correct. When your teacher grades the test, she may do the opposite. Example 2: The rearranged equation to solve for mass of the chemical is (mass percent.total mass of the compound)/100: (15.175)/100 = (2625)/100 = 26.25 grams sodium chloride. The amount of water to be added is simply the total mass minus the mass of the chemical: 175 – 26.25 = 148.75 grams water.

Percent, an abbreviation of per centum meaning per hundred, is how we express a number as a fraction of 100. Some of us use percentages daily, whether in mathematics or engineering fields or calculating what to tip the waiter or waitress after eating out. The basics are pretty simple, really.
MathsIsFun.com perhaps has the easiest way of explaining it, describing that when you say percent you're really saying 'per 100' with:
- 100% meaning 100 per 100, or all
- 50% meaning 50 per 100, or half
- 25% meaning 25 per 100, or a quarter
- 10% meaning 10 per 100, or a tenth
- etc., etc.
